First let me describe the problem:
All of my Windows Explorer settings appear to be stuck at the defaults. If I go to Tools>Folder options... and change them, the change does not take effect, and if I open the menu again, the check boxes are back to the same state as before.
When I right-click in empty space, my New menu is empty.
Also, if I try to drag a shortcut to the taskbar, or pin an item to the start menu, nothing happens.
Now this all started after removing a piece of beta software (being developed at my employer) using the add/remove programs list (my mistake). It apparently corrupted the registry, causing a bluescreen at boot. I let the system do the auto repair, which
got me able to boot again, but with the problems noted above.
My next action was to try System Restore to bring me back to a state a few days back. Unfortunately, the restore failed, and upon going back into System Restore, I found all of my restore points had disappeared (!).
I next exited Windows and replaced (after making backups) DEFAULT, SAM, SECURITY, SOFTWARE, and SYSTEM in Windows/System32/config/ with the copies in RegBack. After rebooting, this did not seem to change anything.
Any ideas about how I might still get my old settings back or at least be able to change them again? I was hoping to avoid reinstalling Windows.
