Internet Explorer Proxy Settings

$

Hi,

We are setting up our Windows 7 PC's to use a proxy server for Internet access, as part of this we are ticking the bypass proxy for local addresses check box and entering the required server names.

What we are seeing though is if the servername has a hyphen in it's name it seems to split it over two lines., for example if the address web-mail.domainname.com is not the first in the line it gets split at the hyphen for example:

mailserver.domain.com;web-

mail.domain.com

Is this just a display issue? Or is there a problem with using hyphens in the servername?

Thanks,

Ok I have upgraded to window 10 and ever since my "Control + C" will not copy to the clip board. If I use "control + ins" it works fine. I thought it maybe the wireless keyboard so I hooked up a USB keyboard and still have the same issue. Is there a way to control this in window 10 were it can be turned on and off? I cant find a setting for this.

Mighty all,

Does anyone know if there is a command line parameter for the "schtasks /create" command, which would enable the "run task as soon as possible after a scheduled start is missed" option?

Many thanks in advance,

KERENEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR 0x7A BSOD while playing Dark Souls 3

Hello all.

I've been getting these BSOD only when playing the new Dark Souls 3. I think the problem in my Windows HDD, since it's so old and CrystalDiskInfo give some bad info about it(Although chkdsk doesn't detect anything bad). Also one of the parameters say it's HDD failure to read or whatever. The video driver is up to date and the Windows Install is pretty fresh(Already tried formatting and the problem persists).

I need someone with more BSOD knowledge to tell me with more certainty what may be causing this.

The minidumps are here: https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=8A24A5C8DA1551DD!241&authkey=!AA9sOexkSBTPl5o&ithint=file%2c7z (The oldest one had driver verifier activated).

Have a good one!

Recent MediaID.bin-files but no recent back-up

I want to restore some program files form a windows backup. As far as I know Windows had made these on a regular basis. On my pc I have  a folders named Backup Set 2016-03-08 144041. This contains folders named Backup Files 2016-03-08 144041 and Catalogs. Backup Files 2016-03-08 144041 contains literally hundreds of zip files which seems to contain backup data.

But if I try to restore files using the Windows BackUp Function the most recent backup that I can find appears to date from November 2015. Does this mean that no more recent backup exists? But then what is the function of this Backup Set  folder? Is there any possibility to restore data from a backup more recent than November?

Problem with missing .dll files

Hi,

My computer has recently been reporting a lot of missing .dll files, as well as some other errors most likely caused from the .dll files. They are usually reported when trying to open Steam or other games. I have run a disk check, attempted a system restore (but all the restore points were gone), ran MalwareBytes, and ran sfc /scannow in the command window, and it gave the following CBS log. It says it found corrupted/missing files but could not fix them. Please let me know what you think I should do. Thanks so much!

Windows 7 - To disabled Startup Repair on computers with BitLocker intalled

$

Hi,

We are looking at disabling the Startup Repair on all Windows 7 computers across the organization.

Some of these computers, has BitLocker installed on them.

Few Questions:

1. Will disabling Startup Repair bring any impact to computers with BitLocker installed?

2. Does Startup Repair cause computer to disjoin the domain?

3. Is there a way to disable Startup Repair using SCCM? or is it better to do it via GPO?

Thank you

Componet services_Dcom Config_setting identity tab

I have 2 AD accounts, 1 regular, 1 admin. When it comes to network shares I need to access both under each account but it appears that the explorer process is the issue. My research shows that I need to set the following:

component services/computers/my computers/DCOM Config/Elevated-Unelevated Explorer Factory Identity tab.

switch from "the interactive user" to "the launching user"

I am a local admin on the machine yet I can not modify it cause it is greyed out. My question is how do I give myself permissions to set this?

Delete Previous Domains Certificates

Hi All

I'm in the process of migrating domains. I use Computer Certificates to enable 802.1x authentication.

A problem has popped up, once the certificate for the old domain expires, 802.1x stops working, but its quick to fix, I just delete the old certificate out of the Local Computer Personal Store, and 802.1x starts working again with the new domains certificate.

this works fine for a few PC's, but not thousands.

I have run the command certutil -delstore MY hostname.old_domain.net, which deletes the certificate fine, but I will need to run this on many PC's with a logon script, and specifying a wildcard doesn't work, eg: certutil -delstore MY *.old_domain.net

or is there another way of deleting these old computer certificates that are kept after domain migration?

Thanx

Michael

Network DFS Shares Jumping Back To Root

$

Hi All,

One the DFS network shares keep jumping back to the root when browsing.

This issue seem to only happen on Windows 7 ENT N 64bit to random users!

Tried to install kb983620 and I get message saying "The update is not applicable to your computer"

Confirmed DFS namespace both DFS servers "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DFS\Roots\Domainv2"

Rebooted the local domain controller, rebooted the PC, changed the appearance to classic, disabled all the start-up apart from Microsoft services and non of these helped.

Worth noting that the PC has the latest Windows updates and the DFS servers.

One thing seem to work is by installing admin tools and running "dfsutil /pktflush", we don't want to install admin tools on all the computers to fix this issue or use it as workaround :-(

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

S

UMDF Reflector fails to start (event 10114, Driverframeworks-Usermode) resulting in WUDFRd failed to load... (event 219, Kernel-PnP)

Slow booting.  Really slow booting.  Seems that using an SD card for ReadyBoot/ReadyBoost is causing the issue.  But why?

On investigation, this only started happening back in November, which coincides with the install of KB2685813 UMDF 1.11 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2685813).

Could be a bit buggy....

I'll uninstall the update and see if this solves the issue.

Windows 7 Backup to External HDD

$

I want to make a system image of my Windows 7 Pro laptop to an external HDD. The external drive is connected via USB 2, formatted as NTFS, with 930GB free. My laptop's internal drive is a 250GB drive with 40GB free.

When I go to Windows Backup and Restore and choose "Create a system image" the external USB drive is not available in the "On a hard disk" dropdown.

HOWEVER...on my Windows 10 laptop, 250GB internal drive, going through the same steps, the same external USB HDD IS available for images.

What is the difference?

Problems with SmartCard Logon: Errors 7 and 17.

$

Hello,

I recently deployed SmartCard logon in my Windows Domain (using both a 2008R2 and a 2012R2 DC).  I have gotten it functional - that is, people can actually log in using their smartcards.

But, I have an ongoing issue.  Typically, users will always have an error message on the first time they attempt to enter their SmartCard PIN and try to log in.  This revolves around there being "an error" and needing to report it to the systems administrator.  The actual error log itself on the machine will log either of these two errors:

Event ID 7:  An error occurred while signing a message using the inserted smart card: An unexpected card error has occurred.

Event ID 17:  An error occurred while decrypting a message: An unexpected card error has occurred.

Looking around online hasn't turned up much.  Someone here on the forum had a similar issue, but the marked answer went nowhere.

Occasionally, this error will happen time and time again when they attempt to enter a PIN, but typically it's just on the first attempt - the second lets them in without issue.

The best I've been able to find is that it is a "driver issue" with our readers, but no support on that.  Windows picked the drivers for our smartcard readers.

Does anyone have an idea what may be going on?  I'm not even sure where to begin troubleshooting.

Thanks,

M.

Default printer changes

Hi,

We are having an issue with several of our Windows 7 Professional PC's.

They have a HP Printer installed locally and access to a network installed Ricoh printer, the HP is there default printer but if they select to print a document to the Ricoh printer then their default printer changes to become the Ricoh.

They sometimes have the same problem if they select the PDF printer as well.

Has anyone seen this before?

Thanks

Can't delete folders because thumbs.db is in use

$

We're having a minor problem with Windows 7.  The majority of the time we try to delete a folder full of jpg's, we get an error saying it can't be deleted because thumbs.db is in use.  The user isn't going into the folder itself, so I assume that the machines are trying to make a thumbs.db to be used by the folder icon where it updates to include thumbnails of the files inside of it, and this is why it says thumbs.db is in use?

If that is the case, is there a way to prevent this?  or is my problem something different from what I described?

Deleting files permanently removes them instead of moving to Recycle Bin

Dear All,

I have been searching a solution for this strange issue for long. I'm an IT Admin in a windows domain where few PCs are affected with this issue. When users delete files, it gets deleted permanently and do not go to Recycle Bin. Users do get alert that file will be deleted permanently. I searched a lot and tried few solutions found. Let me brief what I tried so far;

  • This is the Recycle Bin Properties dialog box, which is strange that I don't see drives there.
    Recycle Bin Property dialog
  • After doing a lot of search, I tried few solutions. One is to delete $Recycle.Bin folder for all drives and restarting computer. Then tried deleting a single file. Though this method recreated $Recycle.Bin hidden folders, it didn't fix my problem.
  • Then I found somewhere that booting in safe mode and then deleting a file would repair any issues with Recycle Bin. Tried that as well. Didn't fix my problem.

Please note that all of above actions done and screenshots taken are from an Admin account. Is there anything further I can try to fix this issue? Why did this happen in first place?

Thank you all

Windows Explorer settings can't be changed

$

First let me describe the problem:

All of my Windows Explorer settings appear to be stuck at the defaults. If I go to Tools>Folder options... and change them, the change does not take effect, and if I open the menu again, the check boxes are back to the same state as before.

When I right-click in empty space, my New menu is empty.

Also, if I try to drag a shortcut to the taskbar, or pin an item to the start menu, nothing happens.

Now this all started after removing a piece of beta software (being developed at my employer) using the add/remove programs list (my mistake). It apparently corrupted the registry, causing a bluescreen at boot. I let the system do the auto repair, which got me able to boot again, but with the problems noted above.

My next action was to try System Restore to bring me back to a state a few days back. Unfortunately, the restore failed, and upon going back into System Restore, I found all of my restore points had disappeared (!).

I next exited Windows and replaced (after making backups) DEFAULT, SAM, SECURITY, SOFTWARE, and SYSTEM in Windows/System32/config/ with the copies in RegBack. After rebooting, this did not seem to change anything.

Any ideas about how I might still get my old settings back or at least be able to change them again? I was hoping to avoid reinstalling Windows.

Hi all,

After boot-up this error showed up in the System Event Log :

Source : system  Event ID: 36887  " the following fatal alert was recieved :47

I researched it and from what I understand it may be a security certificate issue??  I havent installed any new programs or hardware, The computer is part of a workgroup not a domain.  checked Windows update... computer fully updated.  I did a complete shutdown... waited 5 to 10 min and restarted and the error didnt show up.  I was curious on what this error means. I sent detailed feedback to Microsoft and also copied the details of the error here. Anyone else have this error?
