Internet Explorer Proxy Settings

$

Hi,

We are setting up our Windows 7 PC's to use a proxy server for Internet access, as part of this we are ticking the bypass proxy for local addresses check box and entering the required server names.

What we are seeing though is if the servername has a hyphen in it's name it seems to split it over two lines., for example if the address web-mail.domainname.com is not the first in the line it gets split at the hyphen for example:

mailserver.domain.com;web-

mail.domain.com

Is this just a display issue? Or is there a problem with using hyphens in the servername?

Thanks,

Windows 7 backup fails with error code: 0x8007054F

I want to use Windows 7 Backup and Restore to backup files to a shared drive on a Mac server. I can browse to the network share from the Windows 7 computer without a problem.

I configured the backup settings and kicked it off. After several hours it stopped and reported that it did not complete successfully. The error code reported is 0x8007054F. No other details are provided.

I can't find anything that tells me exactly what this error means. It seems to be pretty generic. Can anyone help?

Automatic Shutdown after backup?

Hello;
Is there a way to shut down Windows 7 automatically after a backup is finished?
I like to do my backup when I go to sleep, and don't like the computer running so long after the backup is complete.
Is there a built-in feature, or a 3rd party app that will do this?

Thanks

What happens if you turn off Offline Files?

$

0

When we rolled out Windows 7 a few years ago we decided to redirect our users' Documents to our NAS. We also decided not to disable Offline Files for the redirected folders. That has worked surprisingly well with only occasional sync issues and lost files. Our implementation has worked so well that users often aren't even aware when or if they are accessing the offline cache. And we don't either.  Now, changes coming to our NAS have the potential to greatly increase the size on disk of our redirected folders and fill local hard drives with the CSC.

So we need to turn off Offline Files. We will continue to do Folder Redirection, though. Just in case there's something "stuck" in the cache that's not on their NAS folder (you know it happens), what happens to the CSC when Offline Files is disabled by Group Policy? Does it remain intact or is it deleted?

Thanks,

Tom

Windows 7 Backup to External HDD

I want to make a system image of my Windows 7 Pro laptop to an external HDD. The external drive is connected via USB 2, formatted as NTFS, with 930GB free. My laptop's internal drive is a 250GB drive with 40GB free.

When I go to Windows Backup and Restore and choose "Create a system image" the external USB drive is not available in the "On a hard disk" dropdown.

HOWEVER...on my Windows 10 laptop, 250GB internal drive, going through the same steps, the same external USB HDD IS available for images.

What is the difference?

Sleep blocked by "active remote client"

$

Using powercfg -requests I get:

[DRIVER] Filesystem\srvnet
An active remote client has recently sent requests to this machine

This blocks sleep mode (a "feature" of sleep mode).

I have tried disabling wake for sleep on adaptors.  Disabling home group. disabling media center, unistalling windows media, disable auto update, no media sharing....

Because there is a long timeout of maybe 15 minutes or longer on this it so it is hard to diagnose if it is coming from the local machine or the other Win 7 on the network.  The problem seemed to start when I upgrade the second machine from Vista though not 100% sure.

Seems like each machine keeps the other awake?  I have also suspected the Dlink router and turned all of its "added value" features off.  Where is this "remote client" and how to diagnose?

Is there a setting to at least turn the time out to a minute or less?

One machine runnning Win 7 7600 64 before and after this problem started.  The other was Vista and now Win 7 7600 32 since the problem began in BOTH machines.

Dynamic spanned disks

$

I created a dynamic disk on Windows 7 64 bit Professional ((6.1.7601) with all applicable updates verified 10 minutes ago) by connecting directly to a SATA connection on the motherboard.

I then tried moving the disk to my Startech drive dock (SATDOCK4U3E).  It is connected to my motherboard via USB3.0 connection.  The station has a e-sata connection by my motherboard does not.  Further looking at the newer motherboards, e-sata seems to be rare now as there are no Z170 motherboards listed on TigerDirect or NewEgg.

If I buy an e-SATA card should I be able to use the dynamic disk on my drive dock?

I am wanting dynamic disks because I am moving all my DVD's and BluRay disks to hard disk.  I am setting up multiple shortcuts to the movies with the book marks being stored in folders for actors, actresses, and directors.  For instance, the African Queen will have shortcuts stored under Humphrey Bogart, Catherine Hepburn, Robert Morley, and John Huston.  As my collection is quite large (over 8 large 500 slot folders of DVDs though some are not full like the only DVD folder), I am wanting to set the drives as dynamic spanning.  The first DVD folder alone almost filled a 4TB drive.

If Windows 7 will not support this, will Windows Server 2012?  I am expecting before I finish to be using at least 16 disk drives and I would like to clone the drives to a backup set.  Also if Windows Server 2012 and I must move to it, does Windows Server 2012 support DirectX 11?

Microsoft not downloading IE10 for my Windows 7 Prof. 64-bit

IE11 and Windows 7 Prof 64-bit on a laptop seem to cause conflicts with other programs. Especially that I'd like to use "Print Screen" feature. Anyway, things were fine with IE10. How to obtain the download?  Not available on website. Microsoft keeps giving IE11.

Thank you very much.

preventing file overwrite/share conflict in peeer to peer windows 7 homegroup/local file share

HI All,

We have set up three users in a home network where one person holds all the files on their PC and that folder is shared for access to everyone.  It is a remote location so no need to have it too locked down.  I haven't created a homegroup but can if that changes things.  the issue is that at the moment two people can open the same file at the same time without any message about the file already being in use - then the rule of "last person to save the file" wins.  Is there any way - by settings on the PC, or by using homegroup instead, or by using a third party tool - to prevent this from happening?

Thanks,

JJ

Error Code 0x80070057 (2016-4-17-T-04_32_32P)

My computer is eligible for Windows 10 upgrade.  I was trying to download to upgrade however it doesn't seem to be downloading. There is no downloading display to indicate it is downloading and I let the computer runs for over 24 hours. Nothing was downloaded. I am using Window 7 Professional at the moment.

After several failed attempts, I used the Window Downloading Tool and found 4 errors. Three of the errors were fixed however one cannot be fixed automatically.  The error message read 0x80070057 (2016-4-17-T-04_32_32P).

What does it mean and how can I resolve this issue.

Please help.

Turn on advanced logging for Windows

We have multiple Windows 7 x64 Enterprise devices on our domain used for a specific display only need. In about 500 of these devices, around 10-20 are constantly failing for no known reason. We have checked event viewer, verified cpu temperature, updated drivers, and tried reinstalling some key (AV) software, with no effect. If these devices are moved from their current location to a lab, they don't fail, and if a device exactly the same as the original, replaces the failing device, it will not fail either. So I trying to see if there is a way to get some more logs to determine exactly what is running to cause the crash. No memory dump is created due to the way these devices crash, so I need another way to get some more logs to help fix the problem. We do plan to try returning a bad device back to it's original location after it was relocated to a lab, but that hasn't been done yet.

Any suggestions or ideas to help fix or find this issue is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

autoruns.exe vanishes

Saw an article about autoruns and downloaded it.  The first time I ran it, I clicked on the help and the window disappeared.  Went looking for the program again and it had disappeared. Extracted it from the zip file again and it disappeared before I could click on it to start it.  I can't imagine what is going on or where to even start.  BTW, it does not appear in task manager either.

Windows 7 Keeps jumping 1 hour ahead.

10 out of 70 of the W7 x64 Pro NVR recorders I am maintaining keep setting their time to 1 hour ahead. I have set this to sync internet time with time.nist.gov and have set it to manual time as well. They were all initially set to sync time with time.nist.gov and they all went to the wrong time sometime Wednesday night. I set one to manual time on some last and it still jumps 1 hour ahead.

This is a major problem as it stops people from viewing footage as the recorder is 1 hour ahead of the viewing platform so it cannot view current footage.

They are all set to the correct time zone. I rarely have to reset the time normally usually 1 or 2  machines per month.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
