I recently carried out a manual update of windows using the "Windows Update" program. In the list of 'optional' updates it recommended I install one called "Microsoft - Pointing Drawing - Microsoft Hardware USB Mouse" which was released in April 2013. I selected to download and install it as I have a Microsoft mouse (I already have the MS Mouse and Keyboard Center program installed)
This hardware update downloaded, along with all the Windows other security updates and then started to automatically install. When it was the turn of the hardware update to install an additional popup screen appeared and said it was connecting to Microsoft and then started to download something. The download process was indicated by small animated squares racing along the bottom of the popup screen but it didn't give any indication of what was downloading or how long it would take.
After several minutes the popup screen still had the squares jigging across the bottom and nothing else had changed. I thought it seemed to be taking a long time to download a mouse & keyboard driver so I cancelled the popup screen hoping to stop the installation. The remaining Windows updates installed themselves and I restarted the system.
I checked my "View update history" option in Windows Update and it listed the "Microsoft - Pointing Drawing - Microsoft Hardware USB Mouse" as being successfully installed so I clicked the "view details" then the "more information" link. The webpage it opened didn't give any information at all. When I now try "Windows Update" the program is no longer listed as an optional download.
I also checked my "programs installed" from Control Panel and then the "View installed updates" from the Control Panel submenu list but the program wasn't listed in either.
Does anyone know:
-what this software/driver is
-if it has or hasn't been installed on my system
-has anyone else experienced the long download time
