Windows 7 black screen during startup

Hello.

I need some help. I have a Compaq Presario CQ62-209WM running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. It is a couple of years old, but it had never given any problems until a couple a weeks ago when the screen started going blank during the startup process.

What happens is this: when I turn the computer on, it briefly shows the animated Windows logo and the message that says "Starting Windows", so it looks like it's starting up, but then the screen goes completely black. I have to hold down the power button to turn it off and when I turn it back on I see the message that says "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause." But there haven't been any hardware changes and no new programs have been installed recently. The only software changes have been updates.

So I select "Start Windows normally" and then everything runs fine. I log into Windows, open any program and I'm able to do everything as usual. At this point I can restart it or even shut it down and turn it back on and will start normally. But if I turn it off and don't turn it back on until, say, the next day, the problem with the black screen comes back.

Any idea what might be causing this?
