Can I add a network printer to a user's local profile purely via manually editing registry keys?

This question is mostly for my own curiosity as I know logon scripts and GPOs are the best way to map printers for users.

I was just wondering if it was possible to assign a printer to a user's local profile on a computer via manually adding\editing registry keys under HKEY_USERS\<SID>\Printers.

Has anyone tried this?

Also for my own edification, is there a reference for what the various subkeys are for? I googled with not much luck

Thanks for any info
