Hi,
This is my first message so please be gentle ;-)
For the past few weeks every time I was shutting down my computer I was getting the same 3 updates being installed. In Windows Update it said that they had been succesfully installed but everytime I clicked "cehck for updates" it said that they needed installing. I read up a few threads and the one that seemed to come back a lot was to stop the Update Service, delete the contents of the C:\windows\SoftwareDistribution, then restart the Update Service
That fixed the problem with the 3 updates which constantly needed installing but created another problem : everytime I try to go into Windows Update and check for updates, I ge the same message : "Windows can't update important files and services while the system is using them. Save any open files and restart the computer, and then try to check for new updates".
I have tried multiple fixes but with no luck :
1) downloaded and ran a few FixIt : MicrosoftFixit.wu.Run.exe ; MicrosoftFixit.wu.LB.155272612326445907.2.1.Run.exe ; MicrosoftFixit.wu.LB.155272612326445907.3.1.Run.exe ; MicrosoftFixit.wu.LB.159272602259348024.3.1.Run.exe
2) removed the "Reboot Required" folder in the Registry Key by following these instructions : 1. Open regedit.exe ; 2. Navigate to the Registry Key “HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/WindowsUpdate/Auto Update ; 3. Look for Registry Key “RebootRequired” ; 4. Delete the Registry Key. Do not look for a value, there will be a KEY(folder) called “RebootRequired” ; 5. Reboot the Machine ; 6. Run Windows update again.
3) emptied the temporary internet files folder by following these instructions : 1. Open Run Command (Windows key + R) ; 2. type: cd %temp% ; 3. Empty the contents of that folder (del *.*) ; 4. Restart your computer
4) Tried this : 1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER ; 2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup. ; 3. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box. ; 4. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All. ; 5. Click OK. ; 6. When you are prompted, click Restart. ; 7. After the computer starts, check whether the problem is resolved.
If I click on "view update history" in Windows Update, it shows nothing., yet there are loads if I click on "Installed Updates".
In the re-created C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder there is a file called ReportingEvents.log. It's contents are :

I run Windows 7 Home Premium (64bit) with SP1. It came pre-loaded on my Samsung laptop and they didn't give me the installation discs. I use Norton 360 as Firewall and Anti-Virus and all is up to date, and a recent scan did not bring up any issues. I also ran cCleaner to remove any unnecessry files.
Any suggestions pleeeeeeeeeeease ?
Thanks
Nic
