Why Can't Compressed Folders Include Files Whose Names Include Certain Characters?

I have a folder with a few hundred workbooks that I want to put into a zip file (compressed folder).  When I tried to do that I got an error message that said:

[Window Title]
Compressed (zipped) Folders Error
[Content]
'<Path><File Name>' cannot be compressed because it includes characters that cannot be used in a compressed folder, such as -. You should rename this file or directory.
[OK]

I don't every having a problem with WinZip because of a file name.  If the file name is valid for the file sysem why is it not valid for a compressed folder?
