Assigning an application to different sound outputs

$

Question: Is there a way to assign an application to use a sound output options in the mixer or another Win7 application?

I have installed Win7 RC 32bit.  I have headphones and speaker outputs on my system.  Both are detected and both can be assigned to a working default sound choice.  I am unable to assign an applications sound output to a certain outputs or change them.

The only way I can make a sound application work through the speakers if the headset is assigned the default role is to go into sound management, then assign the speakers to default and then restart my application.

Desired: I would like an application profile to default to the assigned role from the mixer.  The settings could be permanent or temporary.  If the 1st choice is not available, use the alternate working or (default).  The sound should dynamically change or at the very least keep that profile with that application until changed.

In the mixer, I should be able to rt click on the application in the mixer and manually assign it to a sound device.  This option should be assigned to a default target to play ONLY if the desired is not available.  Possible options can be, just one time, or have this device handle sound if available.

Hardware:  Asus Rampage 2: Gene motherboard, 6GB Ram, GTX 275 graphics, Seagate 1.5TB.  Drivers auto discovered on install and appear to be functional.

My computer doesn't awake when sleeping to perform a programmed backup.

Windows 7 - Updates Fail - 800b0001

$

I'm having problems with our computers getting updates. We were using a WSUS server previously and are moving to a different update management system. Unfortunately the new system doesn't seem to be able to apply updates. So for the time being, I switched back to trying to update directly from Microsoft. But the computers can't even check for available updates. As soon as I try, I get a 800b0001 error with "Windows could not search for new updates". I did some digging and this is what I've got so far:

From event viewer: pastebin

First thing I did was try the System Update Readiness Tool. That ran and the machine still couldn't check for updates. I checked the log files and there are no issues:pastebin

I tried running SFC /scannow and it comes back with "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

I looked into the log files for the new update management system, and I'm seeing where the updates fail there as well. The error message is "[Windows Update Agent] 'Error: Agent has failed to detect due to: 0x800b0001.'. Error code: Unknown trust provider.. Event ID: 148."

Here are the current GPOs applied to the machine:

Configure Automatic Updates - Enabled - Auto download and install

Specify intranet Microsoft update service location - Disabled

Automatic Updates detection frequency - Enabled - 10hrs

Win7 PRO 64 - backup issue at 7%

$

Hi all,

I believe my problem is with the Shadow Copy on my install of Win 7 Pro 64.

Basically if I schedule or request a backup it hangs at 7%.

Looking into various forums it looks as if "a" programs msi is hanging the Backup.

All the services are running, but no matter how long (17 hrs i've tried) it still reports at 7%....

I have made the Shadow volume service interactive with desktop in case there is a error that pops up (no popup turns up!).

So I've resorted to the Backup log (Backup Files 2015-01-02 161516_error.log)

2 bytes big - Empty

SO to the ETL (WindowsBackup.1.etl)

1920KB Maybe something to go on here...

819 event 13's every 3 to 5 events changes the GUID

for e.g.

Event ID :13GUID=b7d39042-6284-b652-5fe6-32f60e0380e6 (No Format Information found).

Except the most recent which quotes

Event ID :13 GUID=25ff2aec-691b-15fd-237c-a0075c8c5ea1 (No Format Information found).

It seems that this can be decoded and I can then uninstall the identified miscreant so my backups work.

First

Are my assumptions/deductions true?

Second

Can I identify the culprit? if so how?

Third

If I can't identify whats going on, is there a way out?

as I can only see a clean format install and trying Backup after each of my 80 ish programs install's in my future.

Thanks in advance

Robert

Kernel-Event Tracing

I keep seeing this Kernel-Event Tracing and cannot figure out why and in addition to that I keep getting blue screens whenever I start my PC back up from Hibernation mode. I cannot figure out why, all devices have the current drivers. I just built this PC and I am running Windows 7 64-bit w/ 8GB of DDR3 ram, AMD Athlon II X4 635 Processor 2.9 GHz. The only thing that I am think that could be causing the problem is the NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX+ graphics card. Should I take that back and get an ATI graphics card?

Disable Album Art Generation in WMP and music libraries

$

Using Windows 7 Pro

I have a music collection with album art already specified for most files. The album art filenames can be folder.jpg or AlbumName.jpg or cover.jpg or front.jpg or embedded within the file itself.. As on Windows XP pro I was using winamp. The only thing keeping me from WMP is that it generates its own album art files (creating clutter - very annoying) and most of the time will not use the album art I already have.

I tried using the music library on windows 7 but then WMP accesses it and starts creating album art files.

WMP automatically adds something like album_art####.jpg, album_art_small, album_art_large, and/or Folder.jpg

Is there a way to use the libraries and WMP so that album art files are not generated?

Desktop Gadgets

I get the message that "Desktop gadgets are managed by your system administrator." However, I am designated as the "administrator" and I am logged in properly. This is one of the two home computers on my "Home Network" in case that is a source of the problem. I know that there is a problem with gadgets on Win 7 Home Prem SP1 if I am using IE 11, as I am, but, so is the other of my home computers, on which there is no problem. (I do known that the gadgets display as "information only.")

How do I solve this problem? I am not a professional!

Thank you.

DIR cmd cannot display directory with long filename

Unfortunately I do not know when this issue became a problem so I can't simple Restore to a previous point. Furthermore I really do not want to look through some 32000 topics related to long name. So I apologise in advance if this is a duplicate question.

When I open a CMD window in my user account (admin) and execute a DIR; a listing on my user folders returns. When I perform a DIR Documents a listing of folders in my Documents is returned. When I perform a Dir Documents\Excel for example the files within that folder display. However when I try a DIR Documents\My Games or Documents Visual Studio 2010 I recieve a File Not Found. Even more bizarre is that DIR Documents\My Music WILL display the folders within. However if I DIR Documents\VISUAL~3 (I have three Visual Studio folders 2005, 2010 and 2012) a listing of folders therein is displayed.

Interestingly enough My Music does not appear within Windows Explorer whereas My Games and Visual Studio 2012 does.

I have tried Check Disk and repaired errors to no avail. All the folders share exactly the same users and permissions.

WTF? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

TIA

Allen

How to Change Permissions in Windows Installer

$

Using Windows 7 Home Premium, meaning no gpedit function to edit group permissions.

Deliberatley trying to install an older version (10.0 x64) of iTunes *.exe file.

Unfortunately, windows installer permissions not sufficient to effect install of older version.

Anyone know step-by-step security adjustments to install such programs?

Historically, never had a problem installing any x64 versions of iTunes (or anything else), including current 11.x series of iTunes.

When I right click file, it shows all users have full control already.

Ideally, I want windows installer to install anything i choose, without asking special permission.

Thx

Windows 7 - Ran "sfc /scannow" and getting resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them, even though CBS.log doesn't show any errors?

Hi,

Earlier, I was getting "resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them" when I ran "sfc /scannow", and the CBS.log was showing problems with the games that come with Windows 7 and also with simsunb.ttf.

So, I uninstalled (disabled in Control Panel) the Windows games and copied simsunb.ttf from another machine and rebooted, and now, when I run "sfc /scannow" it is still showing the same "resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them" message, but then when I run "findstr /c:"[STR]" cbs.log", it is not showing any errors in the output.

Can anyone tell me why the "sfc /scannow" is still showing the same message (and how to get rid of the problem)?

Thanks,

Jim

gents,

I suddenly can't install drivers so that my new iLok and my Logitech USB-Dongle aren't working. I did a backup of all drivers from another Win7x64 systemdrive and extracted them. The Drivers were working on that system and am there.

Still I got a FILE NOT FOUND or similar error.

I checked the SETUPAPI.DEV.LOG which I copied below. Can anyone see what's the problem with the iLok driver f.e. ?
