Applications with print preview not connecting to printer

Hello,

Having a strange intermittent issue on a customer's Windows 7 Pro laptop.  Most of the time, printing works fine.  There are three printers installed on this laptop.  However, sometimes Microsoft Office programs and Adobe Acrobat and Reader fail to "see" the printers.  Errors are:

Office:
Unable to Connect
Print preview is not available because Microsoft Excel could not connect to the selected printer.

Adobe:
Before you can perform print-related tasks such as page setup or printing a document, you need to install a printer.

When this situation arises, all the printers are still listed in "Devices and Printers".  I can print test pages on all the printers, and I can print from Notepad on all the printers.  A reboot will fix the issue.

The similarity I see here is that MS Office and Adobe products have a print preview image that is generated when you go to the print dialog, and this is where the failure occurs.  Any program that does not use this print preview image can print normally.

The user would like to not have to restart the computer when this issue arises.  Is there anything I can do to resolve this intermittent issue without a restart of Windows?

Thanks,
Michael
