Using a bank of windows7 machines for remote processing

Hi

The company I work for does a lot of processing of seabed data. At the moment they process the data on their local machines but there computers are really not up to the task. The jobs are data intensive 6Tb a job.

My manager has asked about using some of the site rack computers we have. He wants to put them in a rack in the server room and then buy users cheap laptops to RDP in. What do you think about this?

I have thought about it and I think having loads of RDP sessions running across the network might not be the best thing. Plus if 2 people log into the racks performance would take a big hit. People who are in the middle of work could get logged off by another session. And I'm concerned about general performance of this setup.

I think if they want to do it they should invest in proper stacked servers with multiple VM and 10Gb links.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
