Dell often starts in 2nd screen which is not there

I have a Dell Inspiron 15 running Win 8.1.

Frequently, even though I do not have a second monitor connected (and have devices set to PC screen only) when I start my computer, it starts in the non-existent screen.  I have to plug the external monitor in and then set the Device option AGAIN. 

This is very frustrating and did not happen with my ASUS laptop and the same external monitor.
