I had a client that installed Internet Explorer 10 and then did a system restore to resolve some other issue.  This created a BIG problem.  Internet Explorer 10 opens then immediately closes (flashes).  It get’s worse though.  Internet explorer 10 cannot be uninstalled from programs and features or and it’s not listed in view installed updates…it’s just not there.  If you try to reinstall IE 10 it says a newer version is already installed.  YIKES!!!

Here’s what worked for me.

  1. Click Start (Windows Globe)
  2. Click All Programs
  3. Click Accessories
  4. Right Click Command Prompt and click Run As Administrator
  5. Type sfc /scannow and press enter

This process can take up to and hour (or more) to complete and may ask for your Windows 7 media.  At the end of the sfc /scannow it may reboot your PC.  Once your PC reboots you’ll have Internet Explorer 9 (or 8/7) installed.  Now if you need or want to load Internet Explorer 10 again you can reinstall it by downloading it again.

I have no idea if this will work for everyone, but this worked for me after dozens of attempts at various fixes.
