Opening files from programs takes a while to propigate

Hello, I have a client that just upgraded from Server 2003 to Server 2012 and all there pc's have been upgraded from XP to Windows 7.

They are having a weird issue.  Let say they open up Word, They goto File/Open, they then select there mapped drive.  It takes about 3 to 7 seconds for it to show all the files in the directory.

This shared folder has thousands of files and folders in it.  Part of me thinks this is normal, but it doesn't happen on there old XP Pc's.

I originally thought this was an issue with office, but turns out it happens with Adobe, Quicken and so forth.  So im assuming this is an issue with Windows 7.

If you goto to the shared folder in explorer whether it be via unc or mapped drive, the files are all there instantly.  But if you use a program its slow to show all the files.

My guess is whats happening is as follows, you open word, goto the folder, it has to filter out anything that is not a word file, im assuming this is whats taking time.

The files open quickly and with no problem once it shows all the files

Is there any settings in Windows 7 I can change to have it show up quicker.  In Windows xp I don't have the problem.

It does not happen on all folders, just ones that have large amounts of files in them.  A folder with only 100 files has no problem.

To me 3 to 7 seconds isn't bad considering how many files are in the folder, but the users don't see it that way especially since it didn't happen on there old pc's.

Thanks

Mike
