How do I remove all traces of .NET Framework 4 Client Profile from my system and what is the status of KB958488?

I am using 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium. I asked the following questions on a Microsoft Community forum but I did not get a reply.

On the 15 November last, I installed the Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center “by accident” (without going into details, it is sufficient to say that it wasn’t described as such in Windows Update).  I subsequently discovered, when looking in “Programs and Features”, that Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile had also been installed “under the covers” at the same time. On the 21 December, I decided to uninstall the Mouse and Keyboard Center and, afterwards, I uninstalled .NET Framework 4 Client Profile as well. I have two residual problems:

  1. Having supposedly uninstalled .NET Framework 4 Client Profile, I still have directories in C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET called v4.0.30319 which were created at exactly the same time that .NET Framework 4 Client Profile was installed. And there is another directory in C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET called “assembly”, with three empty sub-directories called “GAC_32”, “GAC_64” and “GAC_MSIL”, which were all created at that same time as well.

It seems to me that the uninstall of .NET Framework 4 Client Profile did not do a very good job and requires some clean up afterwards.  Is there a good cleanup tool that I should run after uninstalling .NET Framework 4 Client Profile?  Or are there any instructions for a manual clean up?

I am aware that Windows 7 comes with .NET Framework 3.5.  But I would prefer not to have .NET Framework 4, or any subset of it, on my system unless I have applications that require it (which I don’t). So I would like to tidy up as best as I can after uninstalling NET Framework 4 Client Profile.

  2. I also noticed in my update history that KB958488 was also installed at the same time that .NET Framework 4 Client Profile was installed. In my update history, it is described as “Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 Shared”. However, if I look up the KB article 958488 in Microsoft Support, it has the title “An update is available for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2”. Investigating further, the article lists the files comprising the update and, if I inspect the details of those files on my system, each one is designated as belonging to .NET Framework 4.0.40305.0.

So I am very confused.  Is KB958488 part of .NET Framework 4 or is it part of .NET Framework 3.5?

KB958488 seems to be a slightly odd update.  In “Programs and Features” it appears simply as “KB958488”, and not as “Update for Microsoft Windows (KB958488)”, or something similar.  And there is no publisher associated with it.  This is unique amongst all the Microsoft Windows updates on my system.

I now strongly suspect that KB958488 was also installed “under the covers”, along with .NET Framework 4 Client Profile, when I installed the Mouse and Keyboard Center.  I’m not at all sure that it was offered to me explicitly by Windows Update.  If it was installed under these circumstances, I would now like to uninstall it, even though it is classified as “Important” in my update history.  Does anyone know any more about this update please, or have any views on whether I should uninstall it or not?
